1) What is Counselling?

Counseling is a branch of Psychology. It is not simply advice or suggestion. Counseling is helping people to help themselves based on scientific knowledge principally Psychology.

2) Who is a Counselor?

A person who achieved a professional qualification (Degree, Diploma or PG), knowledge, training and skills to treat feeling, thinking, emotional and behavioral health issues.

3) Why is Counselling?

Counselling can be effective for any relationship issues, problems with academic/field of study/work, unwanted repetitive thoughts, anxiety (fear/worry), depression (sadness), sleeplessness/excessive sleep, stress, communication issues, confusion about interests/abilities, etc.

4) Why shall I (client) approach a Counselor rather than talking with friends/family elders/well-wishers?

i Friends/family elders/well-wishers shall provide emotional support and advice/suggestions ii A counselor uses his/her scientific knowledge and proved counseling techniques to train the client iii. It helps you/client in learning new/different ways of thinking, feeling and behaving to resolve/handle issues/problems/conflicts of everyday life.

5) Can Counsellors solve all the problems?

No, counsellor won’t solve problems. They only help/empower clients to solve problems on their own.

6) Will counsellors prescribe/provide medicine?

No, counsellors will not/should not provide any medicine. They may/can suggest some physical or mental exercises/practices to improve a client’s thoughts, feelings and behavior.

7) What if a counselor cannot help?

A counselor may refer the client to a senior counselor/psychologist/psychiatrist depending upon the problem.

8) Then, who is a psychiatrist?

vA psychiatrist is a medical doctor with specialization in mental health and can/shall prescribe medicine for mental health problems.

9) What is the difference between Counselor and Psychiatrist?

i A counselor usually deals with day to day life issues, low to medium/mild anxiety/depression etc. He/she can also support clients who are undergoing treatment for serious mental problems with psychiatrist. ii A Psychiatrist treats serious mental health problems with medicine. He/she sometimes gets assistance/support from a counselor/psychologist in such a treatment so that client can come out of the problem in a better way and early.

10) Why is it a Video Counselling and why not a telephone counselling?

Nonverbal cues/body language is one of the important aspects of counseling/psychology. Video counselling is more effective when compared to telephone counselling.

11) How can I (client) trust You (counselor/psychologist) or keep confidence on You related to personal matters?

The foundation for counselling or psychological help is completely based on trust and confidentiality. And the first job of a counselor is to keep trust and confidentiality of client. If any counselor/psychologist breaks it, it is suicidal to the counselor or psychologist before it causes any loss to client. Hence a client can trust.

12) What are the Therapies, Tools and Techniques used by Counsellors/You?

These days majority of the counsellors are using an eclectic approach i.e. using two or more therapies in combination based on the client’s need. Below are the primary Therapies that we use: Person Centered Therapy, Gestalt Therapy, Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), Transaction Analysis (TA), Solution Focused Behavior Therapy (SFBT), Reality Therapy, and Behavior Therapy. We also use a range of tools and techniques, such as JPMR, Mindfulness, Grounding Techniques, Worksheets, etc. apart from a range of assessments/questionnaire as per the client needs.

13) What is your qualification?

l (Counseler) hold a PG Diploma in Counselling and Life Coaching by Mr. Karthik Lakshmanan https://counselingchennai.com which is an intensive training apart from MSc. in Psychology. I also hold NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) Basic Practitioner Certificate from Psy. Visesh (well known for NLP in Telugu states) and NLP Practitioner Certificate offered by Dr Mehernosh J Randeria (https://w3coach.com/) and Mr. Pavan Bhattad (https://www.knowledgeandkarma.com/).

14) Will there be a fee refund if I cancel the appointment or for any other reason?

You can talk to the counsellor for 5-10 minutes before paying the fee and get your doubts clarified. Then you can decide whether to avail the services by paying the fee or not. The fee will not be refunded or adjusted under any circumstances, once paid.

15) What if the counsellor cancels the appointment due to some or the other reason?

It is a rare occurrence. If it happens, you will be provided with a new appointment in a similar time slot after having a word with you within the next one-two weeks.
